What Is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a 200-year-old medical philosophy and practice that aims to trigger the natural healing system of one’s body by helping the whole person – mind, body and emotions. Based on the law of similars, it harnesses the body’s ability to heal itself using remedies made from natural substances.

This homeopathic definition is enhanced when you understand how homeopathy originated. After witnessing some pretty horrible treatments for suffering patients, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, a brilliant medical doctor in Germany during the late 1700’s, determined to find natural and harmless healing remedies. After careful thought and research Dr. Hahnemann rediscovered principles like the law of similars, known to ancient healers such as Hippocrates, the father of medicine. Hahnemann experimented with these principles for many years and ultimately formed a system of healing which he called “Homeopathy”, from the Greek words omeos (similar) and pathos (suffering).

“These philosophical principles include:

  1. The body has built-in mechanisms to heal itself.
  2. True cures can only take place within the bounds of nature’s laws.
  3. The body should be considered a series of harmonious energy fields that can be rebalanced in a sick person by using symptoms as keys which govern what remedy should be taken to resolve that particular disease condition.
  4. Symptoms are manifestations of the body’s attempt to heal itself, and will change as the body’s condition changes, for the better or for the worse.
  5. Materials causing similar symptoms in a healthy person may be used to cure those same symptoms in a sick person (The Law of Similars).
  6. The greater the dilution and shaking (potentiating) of a mother tincture, the greater power it has to change the symptoms of a particular disease.1

Through Dr. Hahnemann’s research and “proving” of the law of similars – that “like cures like”, he “concluded that the body is always striving to balance itself and in so doing, certain symptoms manifest themselves.”1 Dr. Hahnemann saw symptoms “as a body language that could be understood and used to design remedies to resolve the problem causing symptoms to appear in the first place.”1 After many more years of research and testing, Dr. Hahnemann published his “proving” of the above principles in 1796, shocking orthodox doctors of his time. “They and many others already had high respect for this German physician as he had been chosen to standardize the German Pharmacopoeia, the nation’s official drug reference, and he had been elected to the Academy of Science.”1  Today, homeopathy is practiced and respected throughout the much of the world including India, England and other European countries.

How Does Homeopathy Work?

It Assists the Whole Person

Since the aim of homeopathy is to help the whole person – the person is the one being helped and not the issue or symptom at hand. While common health systems strive to suppress, eliminate or control symptoms, homeopathy takes the time and inquisitiveness needed to identify the unique and broad range of imbalances particular to each individual and then customize a pathway of care and remedies aimed at restoring balance and harmony, thereby resolving the original problem.

How Homeopathic Remedies Work – “Like Cures Like”

You will have a better answer to the question “How Does Homeopathy Work?” when you also know how remedies work and how they are prepared.

Based on the law of similars – that “like cures like” – “Homeopathic remedies are first tested or ‘proven’ on healthy people. Of those who are tested, anyone “who is sensitive to a particular remedy produces symptoms unique to that remedy. This process is used to gather results and develop a systematic classification of remedies and their effects.”2 If a sick person suffering from symptoms of a proven remedy then takes that remedy, their body would trigger its natural system of healing for those symptoms and that remedy would help relieve their symptoms. In keeping with Dr. Hahnemann’s goal of creating natural remedies and knowing that all physical matter is made of energy, he sought to harness the innate intelligent energy system in living organisms to create remedies. The following describes the process Dr. Hahnemann used to create these remedies, and the process that is used to this day.

How Homeopathic Remedies Are Prepared

High quality materials such as plants or minerals “are carefully selected and mixed with pure water and alcohol or glycerin. This beginning mixture also known as the ‘mother tincture’ is allowed to set for a while to draw out the needed properties required by the formula. The first generation and usable portion of this formula is made by taking a small portion of the ‘mother tincture’, placing it in a clean container and adding 100 equivalent portions of water. This new diluted mixture is shaken vigorously (called ‘succussion’) 100 times to ‘potentiate’ the whole mixture. When this process is finished, the dilution has been potentiated one time, or ‘1X’. Next, another clean container is prepared and one portion of the previous potency is matched with 100 more of pure water. The process is repeated and called ‘2X’.”1  For more powerful formulas, this dilution and succession process is repeated the needed number of times.

“According to the theory and ‘proving’ of homeopathic medicine, the more the mother tincture is diluted and potentiated, the stronger it gets! Each cycle of the dilution and succussion process produces a stronger wave of invisible energy.”1 This vibrational energy is what renders the remedy effective and powerful. Some homeopathic physicians have suggested this process can be compared to rubbing a material until it becomes magnetized – the alignment of electrical energy fields. It is also similar to the “way a television amplifies antenna transmissions until picture and sound are boosted much more than the original.”1

Once a remedy has been produced into the desired potency, it is usually produced in tablet or liquid form for easy absorption. Additional dosage forms include pellets, sprays, ointments and oils.  In accordance to the specific conditions of a person, a homeopath would match the most suitable homeopathic remedy to each patient.

More Than a Homeopathic Definition:

Common Questions and Concerns, Conditions Homeopathy May Benefit and Common Remedies

Offering a good homeopathy definition and answering the “How does homeopathy work?” question, would not be complete without addressing a couple of the primary questions posed by skeptics.

What About the Placebo Effect?

“Many critics of homeopathy believe there is so little active substance in a solution that any benefits from it may not be from the substance itself, but because you think it is effective – the placebo effect.”3 Since homeopathic remedies have been successfully used for animals and small babies, this is evidence homeopathic remedies are not dependent on the placebo effect.

How Safe is Homeopathy?

For the fact that homeopathic remedies are made and used in ultra high dilutions, this alone makes them non-toxic. “Homeopathic remedies have been regulated in the United States since 1938.”3 The medical world and FDA consider homeopathy to be safe.

What Conditions May Homeopathy Benefit?

While the range of homeopathic remedies is extensive, remedies alone do not cure disease. Homeopathy activates the body’s natural healing processes at emotional and physical levels. Homeopathic remedies can be used for acute and first aid relief of bruises, sprains, skin reactions and irritation such as diaper rash, insect bites and poison ivy, minor burns, and the like.  They are also recognized to be safe for coughs, colds and flu. Homeopathic remedies are often used for teething pain, ear conditions, inflammation, stress, asthma, eczema, allergies, hay fever, respiratory inflammation, headaches and more. Often, outcomes are experienced in minutes with proper holistic application. Homeopathic remedies not only assist the body’s healing processes but can also be used to maintain good health and prevention of illness by restoring imbalances when a person’s vitality is low.
